If there’s been any one person who has pushed the boundaries of Malaysian hip hop, DJing and beatmaking in the past 15 years, popular consensus would point to it being DJ Fuzz. Not only known far and wide for his radio hits, speaker-cracking club sets, mixtapes and radio mix shows, DJ Fuzz is synonymous with a deep love and passion for quality music–be it behind the console or in the production booth.
Farzwa De Attaher Emir, or DJ Fuzz as he is known to most Malaysian and global hip hop fans, began his rise to prominence in 1999 when he enrolled and shined in Malaysia’s first ever DJ academy, Playaz Universe. Upon completing his tutelage there, he proceeded to rack up an unprecedented list of achievements and credentials.
DJ Fuzz first began to shine as a member of Teh Tarik Crew, the groundbreaking hip hop group that served to cement his presence in the Malaysian hip hop scene. Concurrently, Fuzz also competed heavily in the DJ battling circuit, scoring wins in the Vestax Extravaganza and Pioneer Digital DJ championships; he stands as being the only Malaysian DJ to have won the Pioneer Digital DJ championships three years in a row. Since then, Fuzz has held down residencies in almost all the major clubs in KL. He was also a member of the Stylustiks turntablist crew with DJ Uno of Pop Shuvit and DJ Cza of Ahli Fiqir. As a solo DJ and as part of Stylustiks, Fuzz has performed in countries like UK, Japan, Taiwan, China, Maldives and other parts of South East Asia.
He has since been inducted into the globe-spanning Bum Squad DJz coalition, and opened his own DJ school, the Mixology DJ Academy. Fuzz has also hosted mix shows on Red FM, Fly FM and Hitz.fm and had his own show called The Mixology on Mix1620, an internet radio station based in New Jersey, USA. Currently Fuzz is on Dansa Era, a mixshow on the number one station in Malaysia.
In 2012, Fuzz released the first book on DJing in Malaysia, called “The Way of The DJ”.
Branching out from DJing, Fuzz has also taken to production, lending his deft touch to projects by MizzNina, Malique, Awi Rafael, Saleem Iklim, Altimet and Yeyo Tabaqueros in USA, among others. ‘KL To Beirut’, a single he produced that featured Middle Eastern artists MC Moe and DJ Lethal Skillz, became a runaway hit in the Arab region, with the music video receiving constant rotation on MTV Arabia and the song getting a firm placing on the charts. The album OK by Malique, which won the 2009 AIM award for Best Hip Hop Album, includes production and scratches on the first single. KO – The Mixtape, a joint collaboration with Malique and produced entirely by Fuzz, topped Malaysian radio charts and won two 2010 AIM awards for Best Hip Hop Song and Best Hip Hop Album. In 2013, won another Best Hip Hop Song “Aku Pelat” on AIM. Further to this, Fuzz’s Mixology mixtape series has become the national standard, combining fresh production with lyrical talent from Malaysia and all over the world.
DJ Fuzz then moved on to establish his own independent record label, Mixology Music, with seven artists under his wing. Artists like W.A.R.I.S, Mark Adam, Iwere, Lawa Nie Geng release chart topping hits every quarter of the year. So far, Mixology Music has released four albums, including the popular “Rembau Most Wanted” album, that contains almost all radio hits, all produced by Fuzz. He is also currently working and helping other labels to break their new artists, using his beats and productions.
